Windows 7 is a great operating system! Add to that the free Microsoft software that is called “Windows Live” and you have an amazing range of tools at your finger tips.

BUT there are also many FREE 3rd party applications that can be used on Windows 7.

Here are 3 of my favourite:

#1 – The GIMP - www.gimp.org

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

#2 – CamStudio – http://camstudio.org

CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs).

CamStudio can also add high-quality, anti-aliased (no jagged edges) screen captions to your recordings in seconds and with the unique Video Annotation feature you can even personalise your videos by including a webcam movie of yourself “picture-in-picture” over your desktop.

Great for creating training videos!

#3 – FeedReader – www.feedreader.com

Feedreader is the most robust, highly-functional personal aggregation solution on the market today. It dynamically reads, collects, and organizes syndicated Web content, and seamlessly delivers it directly to user desktops. With Feedreader, you have instant, convenient access to the up-to-the-minute news you need, without information overload.

Feedreader automatically downloads updates from your favorite Web sites. So, it eliminates the need for you to constantly monitor multiple Web pages, while allowing you to immediately identify and retrieve new articles – no matter how long you’ve been away from your desk.

Happy downloading

Kind Regards

Windows 7 has become my default operating system for both work and home – I still use XP SP3 and Vista SP2 for my business.

Below are my favourite 5 Windows 7 features:

#1 – ISO Burner in Windows 7

The ability to burn ISO images natively within Windows is new to Windows 7. This has proved to be a great feature for me as I often download ISO files from MSDN/Technet, and having the ability to create a disc directly in Windows 7 is fantastic.

More information at: www.win7articles.com/burn-iso-images-in-windows-7.html

#2 – Windows 7 DVD Maker

Windows 7 DVD Maker enables you to create professional-looking video DVDs of your home movies and photos that can be viewed on your DVD players, regardless of geographical region codes.

(Windows 7 Home Premium and above editions)

More information at: www.win7articles.com/windows-7-dvd-maker.html

#3 – Windows 7 Action Center

The Windows 7 Action Center consolidates message traffic from key Windows maintenance and security features, including Windows Defender and User Account Control. If Windows requires your attention, the Action Center icon appears in the taskbar.

This means NO MORE annoying balloons appearing in the bottom right hand side of the screen!

More information at: www.win7articles.com/windows-7-action-center.html

#4 – Windows 7 Resource Monitor

The resource monitor in Windows 7 is one of a few handy tools for monitoring your systems performance. In the case of this tool it does this in real time.

It can both collect and display real time information about the: CPU, Disk, Network and Memory.

It now provides a greater level of information and monitoring, in addition to the change in layout – for instance the graphs are now on the right hand side of the window.

More information at: www.win7articles.com/windows-7-resource-monitor.html

#5 – Windows 7 Performance

Not so much of a “feature” you can physically see on your PC, BUT the fact that Windows 7 has been optimised to start and run to much faster than Windows Vista/XP, Windows 7 is just so much more responsive!

You might find this article and interesting read: Upgrading a 5 Year Old Laptop to Windows 7

I purchased this Dell Latitude D800 laptop in June 2004. At the time it was running Windows XP professional. In 2007, on the release of Windows Vista, I tried to upgrade this D800 laptop via a clean install of the then new OS.

However Windows Vista was having none of it and I encountered many driver issues and it running slower than I ever thought possible! So I had to abandon the process, and the laptop lay unused on a shelf in my home office.

BUT with the release of Windows 7 I decided to see if this would install, after all Microsoft claim that the “footprint” for Windows 7 is far smaller than that of Windows Vista.

Well I inserted the Windows Enterprise (Windows Ultimate but with different licensing for companies) DVD that I had created from a download via MSDN and was instantly suprised at just how painless it was to install!

The only post install work I had to do was to go to the Dell Support website and download the Audio drivers (Windows Vista) for the laptop and they worked OK.

I then noticed that I was limited to only a few screen resolutions as Windows 7 had only installed a default graphics driver. This would have been ok if it was not for the fact that this laptop comes with a 15″ XGVA WideScreen.

So I visited the Dell Support website again and located drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce4 4200 graphics card installed on the Lapatop. However, they were only for Windows XP. So I thought I would give it a go and they worked!

I know have a functional 5 year old laptop running Windows 7!

The only niggle with the laptop is that the graphics card is not up to running AERO in windows 7. But that is not Windows 7 fault!

Also, I need the laptop for work and not for games etc. It has Microsoft Office 2007 installed, runs IE8 just fine and has full internet connectivity via both ethernet and built-in wireless.

I now have the laptop working for me in my business at home:

So if you have an old laptop lying around it might be worth seeing if you can install Windows 7 on it…

When Microsoft say that Windows 7 does not need high spec hardware to run Windows 7 – they are correct!

Kind Regards

With the release of Windows 7 on the 22nd October 2009 to the general public. I thought it would be interesting to discuss the biggest threat for those who already have the operating system installed on their PCs.

It appears it is:

FAKE AntiVirus software!

Windows 7 is the most secure operating system so far from Microsoft, one of the main reasons I switched to it as my main operating systm in July when the RTM became available for businesses using TechNet (that and it is a shear pleasure to use!)

Because it is predicted that Windows 7 will be installed on millions of PCs in the coming year, criminal gangs are turning their attention to how they can infect YOUR PC with a copy of their FAKE AntiVirus software.

There are 3 main ways they do this:

#1) They act as a legitimate website selling a security solution for Windows 7.

#2) They attempt to infect your PC via an email/website etc with a piece of software and

#3) They offer a free trial to scan your PC for viruses and end up infecting you in the process!

The final aim is to usualy fleece you of your credit card or bank account details – and it works as millions of dollars are made by these criminal gangs each year with these scams.

One of the fake AV solutions doing the rounds online is – AntiVirus Pro 2010:

Some users will have not realised they have a fake security product on their PC, but keep getting warning messages like this one appearing:

So What Can You Do To Protect Yourself?

There are some simple steps you can take to help prevent this happening to you:

#1) NEVER click a link in an unsolicited email for PC Security Software. Go direct to a safe vendor like PC Tools OR use the free Microsoft Security Essentials software. Some studies suggest that 50% of home users have NO security software installed!!!

#2) Keep your PC upto date with security patches for Windows and Office. But also for all the other software that is installed on your PC like Adobe Reader and Flash. It is these security holes that can be used to infect you.

#3) USE the latest version of Internet Explorer when surfing the internet.

#4) Perform regular scans of your PC with legitimate security software and keep it upto date with the latest definitions.

#5) Do NOT turn off the User Access Control (UAC) feature in Windows 7. It is there to alert you to any suspicious activity

Stay safe!

Microsoft has reduced the number of elements in the package down to three: the plastic case, the paper sleeve, and a simple Getting Started Guide. The plastic case opens easily like a standard DVD case and it will have a single easy-to-remove seal at the top – and that’s it!

The plastic case protecting the Windows 7 disk is lighter and is recyclable. The packaging itself has a 37% weight reduction over the Windows Vista plastic case.

Windows 7 has a strong compatibility story with Windows Vista, and many applications that currently run on Windows XP-based or Windows Vista-based PCs should just run natively on Windows 7 – allowing you to take advantage of better performance, better management and better security built into Windows 7.

In most cases, Microsoft recommend running applications natively in Windows 7. Windows XP Mode provides what they like to call that “last mile” compatibility technology for those cases when a Windows XP application isn’t compatible with Windows 7. Users can run and launch Windows XP productivity applications in Windows XP Mode directly from a Windows 7 desktop.

Today during a keynote address at Computex 2009 in Taipei, Microsoft’s OEM Division Corporate Vice President Steve Guggenheimer revealed that the company is confident with the progress made with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and that as a result, Microsoft will deliver Release to Manufacturing (RTM) code to partners in the second half of July. Windows 7 will become generally available on Oct. 22, 2009, and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be broadly available at the same time.

“As we’ve said many times, quality is our primary goal,” Guggenheimer said. “We announce each milestone once we’re confident of where we are in the development cycle and that it is ready to be shared with customers and partners. We’ve received great feedback from our partners who are looking forward to offering Windows 7 to their customers in time for the holidays.”

In addition to this, Guggenheimer announced that Microsoft will make available an upgrade option, so partners can offer customers the ability to purchase a Windows Vista-based PC and install Windows 7 when it’s ready.

“Microsoft has been working closely with partners to help our mutual customers be able to enjoy the many benefits of Windows 7,” he said. “With that in mind, we’re excited to say that there will be a Windows upgrade program available. Consumers can buy that new PC, whether for a student heading off to college or just because they need a new one, and know they’ll get Windows 7 as part of the deal.”

The actual start date for the program will be announced when it is ready for consumers, and partners are ready to provide details to customers.

Today’s keynote address is Guggenheimer’s second at Computex. The last time he spoke at the show, he had just taken over the helm of OEM, the division that works with hardware manufacturers worldwide to integrate Microsoft technologies and bring PCs, laptops, mobile handsets and other devices to life.

Although the economic realities of the past year have created new challenges for customers, partners and the IT industry, Guggenheimer says the power of innovation, through both software and broad collaboration with partners, will continue to benefit consumers, the industry and the economy at large.

“What we’re doing with Windows will continue to improve people’s lives so that that technology enables them to communicate better, make tasks simpler and new things possible,” he says. “Our partners in the hardware space, our competitors in software — the entire industry is doing incredible things.”

Casting a Wider Net

To illustrate the point, Guggenheimer points to the evolution of small notebook PCs (often referred to as netbook PCs), the ensuing emergence of a new class of “consumer Internet devices,” and Microsoft’s collaboration with “smart” appliance maker Fugoo LLC, which was first announced at CES in January.

As part of the upcoming Windows 7 Release Candidate milestone, Microsoft will release a beta version of Windows XP Mode, which allows users of Windows 7 Professional and above to launch many older Windows XP productivity applications directly from their Windows 7 desktop. The Windows XP Mode stand-alone feature is specifically designed to help small businesses that are using Windows XP applications move to Windows 7.

Windows XP Mode, an optional feature of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions, helps small businesses upgrade to Windows 7 by providing a virtual Windows XP environment capable of running many Windows XP-compatible business and productivity applications. Customers can run many older Windows XP business and productivity applications within Windows XP Mode and launch them from the Windows 7 desktop with just a single click. A beta of Windows XP Mode will be made available on April 30.

How does Windows XP Mode work?

Windows XP Mode is the combination of two features. The first part is a pre-packaged virtual Windows XP environment. The second is Windows Virtual PC, which is used to run the virtual Windows XP environment. Customers can install their applications into Windows XP Mode using typical installation processes such as downloading from the Web or using the product CD. Once installed, the applications are automatically available on the Windows 7 Start Menu and can be launched just like any Windows 7 program. Optionally, these Windows XP applications can be pinned to the Windows 7 Task Bar and launched using just a single click from the Windows 7 desktop.

Windows XP Mode is best suited for older business and productivity applications such as accounting, inventory and similar applications. Windows XP Mode is not aimed at consumers because many consumer applications require extensive use of hardware interfaces such as 3-D graphics, audio, and TV tuners that do not work well under virtualization today. The sweet spot for applications that run in Windows Virtual PC is business and productivity applications that tend to conform to the basic Windows API (Application Programming Interface.) Small businesses operate under constrained resources and are highly sensitive to the time and expense required to upgrade their PC. Windows XP Mode provides small businesses with the ability to run many Windows XP applications, saving time and expense, but Windows XP Mode does not have 100 percent compatibility with all Windows XP applications. Microsoft encourage ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) and customers to install their applications in Windows XP Mode during the beta timeframe and provide them with feedback on their experiences.

How does Windows XP Mode align with Microsoft’s commitment to application compatibility?

With Windows 7, Microsoft has worked very hard to maintain compatibility with Windows Vista applications. They have an array of tools and resources to help with application compatibility. Virtually all Windows Vista-compatible applications, as well as the majority of Windows XP applications, run unmodified on Windows 7. For those that do not, the Programs Troubleshooter in the Control Panel provides a wizard interface to employ compatibility features that allow applications to run natively on Windows 7. For IT pros the Application Compatibility Toolkit provides finer-grained control over the compatibility features, also referred to as “shims.” When an application cannot run or be natively shimmed, that’s when it’s most appropriate to use Windows XP Mode technology.

How can customers get Windows XP Mode?

Beta testers can download Windows Virtual PC and the virtual Windows XP environment later this week. When Windows XP Mode is released to production, there will be two ways for customers to get Windows XP Mode. The easiest way will be to get it pre-installed on a PC from an original equipment manufacturer or local value-added reseller. This requires minimum configuration and delivers the most compelling experience for small to medium-sized businesses. As an alternative, Windows Virtual PC and Virtual Windows XP will be available as downloads from Microsoft.com for Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise customers. Windows Virtual PC requires PCs with Intel VT or AMD-V hardware virtualization technology enabled in the PC BIOS. Windows XP Mode can be installed by anyone with reasonable PC maintenance experience; however, it is definitely easier to acquire via a new PC.

Now in May 2009 Microsoft plan to release Windows 7 RC (Release Candidate) for the world to download and try…

According to rumours and a webpage that was posted to early on Microsoft’s Technet website (since been removed). Windows 7 RC is due to be published in May 2009 for broad download and that the Windows 7 RC will expire on June 1, 2010.

It is also rumoured that there will be no limit on registration keys, like there was with the earlier Windows 7 Beta build.

…so we just have to wait a little while longer!

The problem for me is I can’t wait – I want it now… I want to see all the changes that have been made since the Windows 7 Beta download (Which was great.)

So until next month.

They have tested 100′s of machines with the Windows 7 Beta code and have found the following:

- On many systems we are seeing noticeable improvements in boot to desktop times (versus Vista)
- Almost all existing Vista drivers are working – great sign in terms of compatibility
- Vista Application compatibility is promising as well (including the IE 8 compatibility mode)
- Transcoding (ripping) media files is faster than Vista

…and this information certainly fits in with the positive response I have been seeing in the blogosphere of late.

Small, mobile and affordable PCs, often referred to as “netbooks” or “mini-notebooks,” were one of 2008’s hottest technology trends. Virtually unknown a year ago, these PCs pushed the design innovation envelope by enabling easy Web surfing, instant messaging, general-purpose computing (e.g., e-mail, social networking and photo sharing) and media playback in one small, ultra-portable device.

This convenience, coupled with an affordable price tag, makes these PCs a great option for many consumers!

How is Microsoft supporting small-notebook PCs with Windows 7?

“Microsoft is offering a clear path for Windows 7 across the board, so as we demonstrated at PDC, WinHEC and CES, Windows 7 provides a great user experience on small-notebook PCs.

With Windows 7, we’ve matched hardware improvements with some investments of our own. With Windows 7 we are on track to have a smaller OS footprint; an improved user interface that should allow for faster boot-up and shut-down times; improved power management for enhanced battery life; enhanced media capabilities; and increased reliability, stability and security.

These engineering investments allow small notebook PCs to run any version of Windows 7, and allow customers complete flexibility to purchase a system which meets their needs. For OEMs that build lower-cost small notebook PCs, Windows 7 Starter will now be available in developed markets. For the most enhanced, full-functioning Windows experience on small notebook PCs, however, consumers will want to go with Windows 7 Home Premium, which lets you get the most out of your digital media and easily connect with other PCs.” – Brad Brooks, corporate vice president for Windows Consumer Product Marketing.
